Because of the incident, the reopening of the Orange Line after the weekend closure was delayed. There is no train service between Sullivan Square and Tufts Medical Center Stations.
While the work was expected to be finished overnight, track replacement work was not completed in time for the morning rush hour.
"The MBTA apologizes for this unexpected disruption in service," spokesman Joe Pesaturo said.

weekend closures designed to accommodate projects at Chinatown, Downtown Crossing, Haymarket and State stations, officials said. Workers have also been replacing 2,250 feet of track.
For northbound Orange Line riders affected by the shutdowns, the MBTA suggested riding the Orange Line to Back Bay, transferring to the Green Line at Copley Station for the ride to Haymarket and boarding shuttle buses for the ride to Sullivan Square, where riders can transfer back to the Orange Line. Southbound riders can follow the same pattern in reverse.
